    Tid Bits to Know:

  • The Cree People enjoyed a variety of games. Long distance running was a popular sport. For those who were skilled with the bow and arrow, the Hoop Game was a favorite activity.
  • The Hoop Game was played by forming two teams standing opposite each other about thirty metres apart. A hoop was rolled swiftly back and forth, with the receiving side shooting at it as it rolled past. Every arrow that missed the hoop became the property of the opposite team.
  • Games were often a prelude to adult activities, and as soon as they were able, many young people played hunting games with small bows, arrows, and spears. Such activities helped develop hand-eye coordination and other skills needed to hunt and survive.
  • Sports were viewed as a release from daily life.  Aboriginal People looked forward to the challenge of playing sports and games as they were often a time of socializing and fun.
  • Many different Aboriginal groups or tribes attend the same powwows.
  • Powwows are held all across North America.
  • Aboriginal dances include the Round Dance, Eagle Dance, Gourd Dance, and the Rain Dance.
  • The oldest form of women’s dance in the Buckskin Dance.
